Video: The SSW Motorcycle – Risky attempt to move a big motorbike up some stairs…It seemed like a …

Adam Cogan General 1 Comment

About 2 years ago, I had a very serious accident on my motor bike that put me in hospital and wrote off my bike. As I reported I recovered fine. It was a shiny black cruiser, a Honda VTX 1800C fat-boy motorcycle, – a loud gorgeous bike. Even though I hadn’t had a stack since […]

China: Coming to a Town Near You

Adam Cogan Chinafy china, chinafy, didi, uber 1 Comment

I’ve been interested in China for over 2 decades. I’ve always been impressed with the way the Chinese have developed their own digital eco-system following the introduction of the Great Firewall of China in 2009. Since that fateful year, 2009, China, in its own technosphere, has evolved into one of the world’s leading digital economies. […]

Azure DevOps wishlist: auto-tagging Project Languages & Technologies

Adam Cogan Azure dear microsoft, tip don't rant 2 Comments

Say your project is basically a Vue.js, .NET Core 2.1, Azure Logic Apps and Azure AKS. I think it would be wonderful to see that straight away in the tags.

Some NuGet packages are important. e.g. Entity Framework or Azure Table Storage. These tell you a bit about the project before you even have a look at it. An amazing feature would be to improve the Auto Tag feature (for both products).

Adam’s 2018 in review

Adam Cogan General, JavaScript Frameworks, SSW Projects 2018 in review, year in review 1 Comment

2018 was a whirlwind year and one that I’m very proud of. It’s fun to look back on and share with you all. This year SSW launched 2 new user groups, hit our highest utilisation rates for client bookings, and ran dozens of sold-out training courses around Australia.

On a more personal level, I was lucky enough to be renewed as a Microsoft MVP for more than the 15th time, presented at a bunch of conferences, both in Australia and abroad, and spent several months living and working in Hangzhou, China with my little one, Ruby. Then, the whole family joined me at the end of the year in December.

Luckin Coffee vs Starbucks: A Luckin Success in China

Adam Cogan Chinafy china, coffee, luckin, starbucks 6 Comments

There’s a new coffee shop chain in China, called Luckin Coffee, and it’s been fascinating to watch their rise in the local market. I know from my own observations that the Chinese in the big cities love their coffee. I’m aware the current stats on coffee consumption per nation says that the average person in China drinks only 3 coffees per year. However, that is changing *rapidly*.

We’ve updated our Rules to Better Angular

Adam Cogan Angular, SSW Rules Angular, Rules to Better Angular, SSW Rules 0 Comments

Angular is everywhere. Angular devs are cool! Angular and React have been the 2 dominant front-end technologies for the last few years. We have been running our Angular Superpowers course that entire time, and I’m still amazed that every time we run the course, we sell out. It’s amazing because JavaScript frameworks have a reputation for […]

NDC Sydney 2018 was awesome

Adam Cogan General, NDC Sydney Conference, NDC Sydney 1 Comment

September has come and gone and NDC Sydney is over. SSW was a large part of this great conference, which is personally my favourite event of the year.

Of course, I love going to NDC Oslo, but there’s nothing like having the Norwegians come to your home town. This was the 3rd annual Sydney event and it was awesome. The conference is a 5-day event (September 18-21), composed of 2 days of workshops and 3 days of presentations.

How to be a great software consultant

Adam Cogan SSW Rules consulting, rules, teamwork 0 Comments

I’m often asked advice on what makes a good software consultant. Hang on a tick before I get to that. Software exists to solve problems and make our lives easier – but any software consultant can tell you that creating software can come with problems of its own. The 2 big ones are: Software is […]

Skin cancer… ouch!

Adam Cogan skin cancer personal 3 Comments

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world – it’s our #1 most common type of cancer. According to the Australian Cancer Council, 2 in 3 Aussies will have been diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they’re 70. As a kid, a lot of my older relatives had skin cancers cut […]
