Motorbike accident
I had a nasty accident on my motorbike last night. It’s written off š„š„
I know bikes are dangerous… Up until yesterday I’d not had a stack since I was 10 on the farm. The bike was a shiny black cruiser, a Honda VTX 1800C fatboy-looking motorcycle.
I don’t have good recollection of the accident, but I believe I saw a car come down the hill and thought we were going to crash, so I put the bike down. Unfortunately, it’s really the best option sometimes… it’s unpleasant but okay – well, okay when you have all the protective gear on. #idiot
I went head over turkey, and lost a lot of skin as I was only wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I cracked the helmet so it must have been a hard landing. I lay on the ground for about 30 minutes unable to move or breathe properly… I must have made a decent noise as there was a crowd of about 100,Ā all too frightened to touch me or remove my helmet. They did cut the straps off my nice new back pack to allow me to breathe. It was a great bagĀ š¢
It was 9pm and I’d just been chatting with Raj Dhatt, talking SSW TV ideas, and I left the office feeling happy that Raj was so pumped and gee’d up.
I hadn’t planned on taking the bike… I wish now that I hadĀ accepted Raj’s offer of a lift home. I said ‘no’ because my house is well out of his his way.
I’m in emergency now for 2 more days… Don’t worry, I’ve skipped all the painkillers that are offered hourly without any mention of the side effects (they suggested Oxycontin twice a day plus 2 Endone’s every 2 hours!).Ā No doctor or nurse mentioned to me that endone was addictive… Or anything negative like constipation… But they pushed it on me every hour!
“EndoneĀ is a medicine used to relieve moderate-severe pain. It may be prescribed by a doctor for either short- or long-term use. A doctor will only prescribeĀ EndoneĀ for patients who have unsuccessfully tried to relieve pain using other, non-narcotic painkillers.”
I’m not feeling much chop at the moment – I’ve got a compressed lung and several broken ribs in my back – but it could have been so much worse. My new Microsoft backpack (from the Ignite conference last month) took the lions share of the impact. All the stuff in there has been totally smashed. Check out my iPad!
In the ambulance the sweet paramedic lady told me how her dad died on a motorcycle and asked me to give the bike up… I might do just that –Ā until Tesla brings out a motorbike with auto pilot š¤ š¤

OMG ā¼ļø WTF …. You’re not kidding me with this email Adam …. Bloody hell #idiot sounds rather apt. Who rides in shorts and a T-shirt ??? You know better than that. Skin and bitumen should never have their marriage consummated.
Broken ribs too. They are agony and the next four to six weeks will be so painful…. but then you don’t want to hear that do you !
And just when I got you feeling so much better!!!!
So what hospital has the pleasure of your company and for how long ??
Love your obvious sense of humour in your post despite being through such a horrible experience.
You’re convincing me to sign up to your blog.
Best wishes mate. Cheers, DocLarry

Hi Adam sorry to hear. I recently had a cycling accident. Hit a burnt out stolen car and ended up in its boot at 4:45 am. The paramedics were most friendly as well.
Rob Castaneda suggests we both take up more safe hobby.s Luckily haven’t dropped the motor bike but always wear my leathers for the very reason you outlined.

Im glad to hear you are alive! Only wearing shorts and tshirt on a bike is a big mistake. I hope you will lern from your mistakes. I dont think the solution is not to ride a bike anymore because if it is your passion you should not give it up. Not because you are afraid. Maybe because you have a wife and children who will ask you to. Life is dangerous and riding a bike without protection gear is careless. Be aware of the danger protect yourself and know your limits. I know someone who had a motorcycle accident in which he lost his wife almost his left arm and almost two legs. He had a very good protection gear which obviously saved him. He is suffering from a Post traumatic stress disorder and was not able to get out of bed for 10 months. He had to learn how to walk again. The accident is almost a year ago and yesterday he bought a new bike. He has been riding for 20 years and it has been part of his life. Also he has never had an accident before. Although I couldnt have stopped him I even supported him because I know what it means to him.
Yes, riding a bike is dangerous, but so is riding a bicycle in traffic or skiing, snowbording, climbing, hiking……. Even doing the household is dangerous and a lot of people die (allthough that would be embarrassing).
Some people first need to get hurt before they learn something. Please send me a picture of your protection gear before you ride your bike again and dont forget back protection. You should prefer leather. If its too hot take the tesla with aircon. Just remember not to act like an idiot again. Please
Love Cosma

[…] 2017 was a whopper. Ā It was Trump’s first year as president, the year of the #metoo hashtag, and the year Australia (finally) legalised same-sex marriage. I think my wife will probably always remember it as the year I almost died on a motorbike. […]

I’ve had two major crashes during my early “biking career”.
The first time I skidded with my left leg trapped under the bike when the tyres could not handle my MotoGP-style cornering. Wearing cargo berms and T-shirt, my left shin and left elbow lost plenty of skin. Thankfully no musculoskeletal injuries. Shoes DEFINITELY protected my toes from nasty business.
Second time I bumped over some weird object while cornering, and totally ruined my line sending me knocking the road-divider kerb. I landed on the OPPOSITE SIDE of the road. It was industrial area and if I had been riding during peak hours I would’ve been run over by oncoming lorries or trucks, and game over for me. I sustained surface scratches again to my right side limbs.
After that I wisened up and wore armoured jackets and gloves. For the remaining four years til I scrapped the bike though, I hadn’t had an accident ever since. Probably due to my maturity with a more cautious and alert riding style.
My fellow rider friend once told me, it is a CERTAIN eventuality that a motorcyclist will crash, be it alone or involving other vehicles/pedestrians, minor or major. I have no choice now but to believe him. š
